Inventive Dakho (Iranian folktales) Old and new tales (main page)Old and new tales (main page)

Dakho, the famous character of Iranian tales, was an inventive man.
Here are some of his inventions.

A special hen for frugal managers
One day, when guests came to Dakho's place, pilau topped with a fried chicken was served. The guests wanted to tear the chicken asunder but they did not manage. The delicate guests were trying in silence to tear off a piece, when the neighbor's wife appeared on the roof of the adjoining house and cried,
"Borrow us your rubber hen, we expect company tonight!"
"We need it at the moment, look in later," answered Dakho's wife.

Remedy for bedbugs
The inhabitants of the village where Dakho lived suffered from bedbugs. Sometimes people could not get a wink of sleep all the night long. They asked Dakho's advice.
"It's child's play to me!" said Dakho. "Catch all bedbugs, open their eyes and pour ginger with pepper into them. The blind bedbugs will not know whom to bite.
"But if we catch a bedbug, we'll kill it immediately!" said the villages in answer to this.
"All right, you may do in this way, too," Dakho agreed.

Ice for a drink
One winter day guests called to see Dakho and saw him holding a cup of iced water.
"Dakho-Djan, it is so cold and you are going to drink iced water!"
"I know better than drink water with ice in winter!"
"But isn't it ice in your cup?"
"I love ice so much that in winter I put a piece of crystal into water instead of ice," said Dakho.
