Proper day's routine (Belarusian folktale) Old and new tales (main page)Old and new tales (main page)

There was once a rich peasant. He was very greedy and cunning and always took advantage over his farm-hands. Farm-hands worked for him days and nights for only one meal a day. After breakfast, the farm-hands were usually hungry and doubted if they had eaten anything at all, because the meal was very skimpy. After breakfast, the greedy master usually asked,
'Would you like to have dinner right now? I don't have any meal for you to take to the field'.
'All right', said a farm-hand, 'Give me my dinner now'.
After the farm-hand had eaten his dinner, the master asked him again,
'Why not to have supper? You will be tired after work, so you won't have to waste time for supper and will immediately go to bed'.
After 'supper', the farm-hand worked all the day long and went to bed hungry. Many workfolk labored in the field for the greedy peasant, but no one of them stayed with him for more than a week.
Yet one farm-hand managed to come round the greedy master. He ate breakfast, dinner and supper and asked him,
'Master, where can I sleep?
'How so,' asked the master. 'And who will work?'
'You are mad!' said the farm-hand. 'Who ever head of working after supper?
Everybody goes to bed after supper.'
He plunked himself down onto a bed and fell asleep.
